Glossary

Denotation- the example of the first level of analysis

Connotation - A connotation is a commonly understood subjective cultural and/or emotional association that some word or phrase carries (things we associate with a word)

Production- The concept of the film is developed from idea to,script,to filming to editing.

Marketing- Publicity for the film in all countries of release to create interest/hype in the lead up to theatrical release.

Distribution- Supplying the product/film to cinema's in hardware/software.

Exhibition- showing the film to the audience.

High Production Values - A film has a higher budget and typically a better quality of outcome

BlockBuster - A movie that has a huge budget and has a great commercial success.

Above-the-line - The delegation of money before a film has been shot, e.g. Cast, Producer, Director.

Below-the-line - The physical production costs of the shoot. E.g. Extras, Location, Food, Equipment.

Media Conglomerate - A media group or institution that owns large numbers of companies in various areas of media.

Subsidary Company - A company controlled by a seperate higher entity.
